Frozen Locks and Dead Key Fobs on Cold Albuquerque Mornings
By Roadrunner Lock and Key
On a cold Albuquerque morning, a car that will not open has two likely culprits: a frozen lock cylinder or a weak fob battery. Thaw the keyhole with lock de-icer or a heated key, the methods Kia's and Nissan's manuals give.[1][2] If the fob is dead, look for the metal key many push-button fobs hide inside.[3]
A frozen car lock is not rare here. The Albuquerque International Sunport averages 26.1 nights each January when the low reaches 32 F or colder, in NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, and Santa Fe's airport averages 30.0.[4] NOAA counts each as a day with a minimum temperature at or below 32 F.[5] We call them freeze nights.
This guide sets Albuquerque's freeze counts against the cold limits printed by the battery maker and a carmaker, which changes what you check first when a fob quits.
How Often Albuquerque Freezes
Albuquerque freezes on about 93 nights in an average year. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Albuquerque International Sunport count 92.8 days a year with a low of 32 F or colder, and 81.7 of them fall between November and February. Santa Fe's airport counts 153.4 a year.[4][6]
A freeze night, in NOAA's terms, is a day whose minimum temperature is at or below 32 F.[5] By month:
| Month | Sunport freeze nights | Sunport normal low | Santa Fe freeze nights | Santa Fe normal low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 1.2 | 46.1 F | 5.4 | 37.7 F |
| November | 11.7 | 34.1 F | 23.5 | 26.6 F |
| December | 25.7 | 26.6 F | 30.5 | 19.5 F |
| January | 26.1 | 26.4 F | 30.0 | 19.9 F |
| February | 18.2 | 29.8 F | 26.7 | 22.8 F |
| March | 8.2 | 36.2 F | 23.8 | 27.7 F |
| April | 1.6 | 43.2 F | 11.4 | 34.1 F |
Source: NOAA NCEI 1991 to 2020 normals.[4]
These are 30-year averages, not a forecast. The jump from 1.2 freeze nights in October to 11.7 in November is why this guide goes up in October, before the first cold week.
Opening a Frozen Lock Without Damage
To open a frozen car lock without damage, try every unlock path before you force the key. Nissan's 2024 X-Trail manual says to heat the key or use the keyless system, and a 2023 Kia manual says to squirt approved de-icing fluid on a lock covered with ice. Neither tells you to pour water on it.[2][1]
Nissan's 2024 X-Trail manual: "If the lock becomes frozen, heat the key before inserting it into the key hole, or use the Intelligent Key system."[2]
- Press unlock on the fob, then try every other door. One frozen keyhole is not every lock.
- On a push-button car, use the keyless system first. Nissan names it as the alternative to a frozen key hole.[2]
- If ice covers the keyhole, use lock de-icer. Kia's manual calls for "an approved de-icing fluid".[1]
- If the lock is frozen inside, use a heated key. Kia says a heated key may thaw an internally frozen lock, and to handle it "with care to avoid injury".[1] Neither manual says how to heat the key.
- Turn with steady, gentle pressure. If the key will not turn, stop, heat it again and retry. Our guide to fixing a jammed lock says the same thing: don't force it.
- Stick to what the manuals name. Neither the Nissan nor the Kia page tells you to pour hot water on a lock or to heat a key in a flame.[2][1]
- Once you are in, prevent a repeat. Nissan's manual says to apply de-icer through the key hole to keep a door lock from freezing.[2]

Why Fobs Fail on Cold Mornings
When a key fob quits on a cold Albuquerque morning, check its battery before you blame the cold. Energizer rates the CR2032 coin cell to operate from -30 C to 60 C, which is -22 F to 140 F.[8] Nissan warns its fob battery may not work below 14 F.[7] Most Sunport freeze nights never get that cold.[6]
In NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, the Albuquerque Sunport averages 92.8 freeze nights a year, but only 12.7 of them reach 20 F or colder and 0.7 reach 10 F or colder.[6] So on about 86% of the Sunport's freezing nights (80.1 of 92.8), the low stays above 20 F: warmer than Nissan's 14 F warning and far above the coin cell's -22 F rated floor.[7][8]
Nissan's 14 F line falls between NOAA's 10 F and 20 F counts, so the Sunport sees between 0.7 and 12.7 nights a year below it. Santa Fe's airport is colder: 50.4 of its 153.4 freeze nights a year reach 20 F or below, so about 67% stay above 20 F.[6]
| Temperature | What it marks | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 26.4 F | Sunport normal January low | NOAA[4] |
| 14 F (-10 C) | Nissan: below this the fob battery "may not function properly" | Nissan[7] |
| -22 F (-30 C) | CR2032 rated minimum operating temperature | Energizer[8] |
Energizer's capacity figure, about 235 mAh, is rated at 21 C (70 F), and the sheet publishes no capacity at freezing temperatures.[8] So we don't claim that cold kills a battery. Kia lists "The battery in the smart key is weak" and "The weather is extremely cold" as separate reasons its smart key will not work.[9]
If your fob works in the afternoon and fails at dawn on a 25 F morning, treat the battery as the suspect and replace it. The early sign, per our key fob page: you have to stand closer to the car than you used to. See what else to check when a fob stops working.
Using the Mechanical Key Inside Your Fob
Many push-button fobs carry a metal key that opens the driver's door when the car's battery or the fob's battery runs out. Consumer Reports says the key "is typically accessed by pushing a button on the key fob and pulling the key out, though on some remotes, the release isn’t obvious." Find yours now, in daylight.[3]
Consumer Reports: "Owners of cars with push-button start systems might not realize there’s a mechanical key inside the key fob."[3] Kia's manual agrees: if the smart key does not work correctly, "you may lock and unlock the door with the mechanical key."[9]
- Find the release. Consumer Reports says it is typically a button on the fob.[3]
- Pull the blade out and find the driver's door keyhole. Consumer Reports says the slot may be on the door handle, hidden behind it, or under a plastic cap next to it.[3]
- Unlock the door. If that keyhole is frozen too, the thaw steps in "Opening a Frozen Lock Without Damage" apply to the hidden blade.
- Start the car. Consumer Reports says some cars can detect a fob with a dead battery "if the key is pressed against the start button or in another designated spot in the car’s interior".[3]
Compare the two on cost and theft risk in our guide to key fob vs traditional key.
What the Manuals Say to Put in a Frozen Lock
The products carmakers name for frozen locks are lock de-icer and, in Kia's manual, glycerine: Kia says to squirt "an approved de-icer fluid or glycerine into the key opening" to keep locks from freezing.[1] For graphite or oil inside a car door lock, neither carmaker page we read gives an answer.
Lock makers do answer it for building and industrial locks. Schlage's A-Series service manual says "Use only graphite or similar material for cylinder lubrication" and to apply graphite by blowing a small quantity into the keyway.[10] Kirk Key Interlock Company tells owners of its industrial SD Series interlocks to use dry powdered graphite and "Do not use oil of any type" in them.[11] Those are door and interlock cylinders, not car doors, so for your car the owner's manual is the authority.
| Product | What a manufacturer page says | For a frozen car door lock |
|---|---|---|
| Lock de-icer | Nissan: apply through the key hole to prevent freezing.[2] Kia: clears ice from a lock.[1] | Yes: both car manuals name it |
| Glycerine | Kia: into the key opening to keep locks from freezing.[1] | Prevention, per Kia |
| Heated key | Nissan: heat the key.[2] Kia: handle it with care to avoid injury.[1] | Yes: both car manuals name it |
| Dry graphite | Schlage, building door locks: graphite in the cylinder.[10] Kirk Key, industrial interlocks: dry powdered graphite.[11] | Not named in either car manual we read |
| Oil | Kirk Key, industrial interlocks: no oil of any type.[11] | No page we read recommends it |
| Hot or boiling water | Not in either car manual we read.[2][1] | Neither car manual names it |
When to Call a Locksmith
Call a locksmith when the key still will not turn after two careful heat-and-try rounds, or when a fresh battery does not bring the fob back. Don't force a frozen key. A fob that still fails on a fresh battery may need reprogramming or replacing; our key fob page says reprogramming is the next step after a battery.
That two-round rule is ours, not a manufacturer's. What moves the cost:
| Fix | What drives the cost | Published figure (third party, not Roadrunner's prices) |
|---|---|---|
| New fob battery | The coin cell; our key fob page calls a battery "the cheapest fix" | None published here |
| Lockout call | Time of day, distance, weather | Thumbtack (no page date shown; read October 19, 2026): a car lockout "could be $65 for standard vehicles," higher after hours, for long distance or in extreme weather.[12] HomeYou (updated September 27, 2026): Albuquerque house calls $30 to $150, as high as $100 to $250 nights, weekends and holidays.[13] |
| New fob, programmed | Brand, programming, backup key | Consumer Reports, 2019: $50 to $400 for the fob by brand, plus $50 to $100 to program it and cut a backup key.[14] |
If you are locked out now, our car lockout service page explains how the call works.
Before the First Freeze in Albuquerque
November brings the first run of freeze nights to the Sunport, 11.7 in an average year, so the cheap fixes belong in October.[4]
Find the hidden key in your fob today and practice the release once. Replace the fob battery if you already stand closer to the car than you used to. Keep a can of lock de-icer in your coat or by the front door, not in the glovebox, because the glovebox is on the wrong side of a frozen door.
If the key still won't turn, stop before you force it. Call or text Roadrunner Lock and Key at (505) 347-2895 with your car's make, model and year. We'll tell you on the phone whether it sounds like a battery, a new fob or a lockout, and we will quote the exact price on the phone before we come. Save the number in your phone. It's easier to find on a warm afternoon than at 6 a.m. in December.
