## What we handle

- ### Inventory with no keys Auction buys and trade-ins that came in keyless. Where the vehicle can be done at the car, a new key is cut and programmed where it is parked.
- ### A second key before resale One key in the file and none in the drawer. A spare made while the working key is still here.
- ### Tow and impound units Units on the yard with no key, handled under the release paperwork for that vehicle.
- ### Fobs that will not respond Checked first for a battery or a lost pairing, before anyone sells you a new fob.
- ### Push-to-start and transponder keys Smart keys and chipped keys programmed to the vehicle, once we confirm on the phone that we can do it.
- ### Customer lockouts on your lot A driver locked their keys in the car in your lot. Give them our number and we deal with them directly.
- ### Keys for the key room Rekeys, master keys and keypads for the office or key storage door, through our commercial service.

## Cars on Your Lot With No Keys? How a Dealer Gets Keys Made On Site
If three auction cars came in with no key, or a trade-in arrived keyless, you do not have to haul each one to a franchise service department. Roadrunner Lock and Key cuts and programs replacement keys at the vehicle, on your lot, for the cars we can do on site. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with the year, make and model of each one for a yes or no and a price per vehicle.
A car with no key at all is the harder version of the job. On most cars built in the last few decades, the key carries a transponder chip, and the immobilizer will not let the engine run until it recognizes that chip. So a new key means two things: a blade cut to the locks if the key has one, and a chip or smart key programmed to the car. A hardware store copy of the blade can open the door and still not start the engine.
That is also why we ask for the vehicle before we quote. Some newer vehicles, especially certain luxury models, need manufacturer-only programming tools that only the dealer has. If a car on your lot is one of them, we tell you on the call instead of driving out, so you can send that one to the franchise dealer and keep the rest on our list. We do not promise that every vehicle can be done; we tell you which ones can.
Our guide [lost car keys? here's how to get replacements](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/lost-car-keys-heres-how-to-get-replacements/) walks through the key types, and [key fob replacement and programming](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/key-fob-replacement-programming/) covers how programming works for a single car.
Keyless units on the lot? Call with the year, make and model of each one.

## One Key Is Not Enough: Getting a Spare Made Before Resale
When a used car comes in with a single key, the best time to make the second one is now, while that key still works. Some vehicles can only add a new key while a working key is present, and once the only key is lost, the job becomes an all-keys-lost job, which is more work. Roadrunner Lock and Key makes and programs spare keys and key fobs at the vehicle.
A missing second key is something a buyer may ask about, and so may the people who handle the car after you: the detail crew, the porter, the next lot if it goes back to auction. A single key is one dropped ring away from a car that cannot be moved, shown or test driven until a new key is made.
Before you call, check what the car actually has. Many smart keys carry a metal emergency blade inside the fob, and that blade may need to be cut for the spare too. A fob that does not respond may only need a battery, and a fob that lost its pairing may only need reprogramming; we check before quoting a new one. The guide [key fob not working: 6 common fixes](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/key-fob-not-working-6-common-fixes/) lists the quick checks your lot staff can do first.

### One key or no key: two different jobs

- **One working key.** A spare is added while the car still recognizes a key. Usually the simpler job.
- **No working key.** The key is made from scratch for that vehicle. More work, and not every vehicle can be done on site.
- **A key that opens but will not start.** Often a copied blade with no programmed chip. Tell us that on the call.

## Auction Cars and Trade-Ins: What to Write Down Before You Call
The fastest way to get a quote on several cars is a short list. For each vehicle, write the year, make and model, whether it is push-to-start or a key you turn, how many working keys you have, and where it sits on the lot. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with that list and Roadrunner Lock and Key prices each vehicle on the phone before anyone drives out.
Auction units can show up with nothing, or with a key that belongs to a different car. Trade-ins can arrive with one worn key, a fob with a weak battery, or a valet key that will not open the trunk. Sort the list so the cars you need on the front line first are at the top.

### A one-line entry for each vehicle

- **Stock number**, so the key goes back to the right file.
- **Year, make and model.** It sets whether we can do the car and what it costs.
- **Key type.** Push-to-start, a turn key with a chip, or a plain metal key.
- **Keys on hand.** None, one, or one that opens but will not start.
- **Location on the lot** and whether the car is locked.
- **The VIN**, ready in case it is needed.

## Towing and Impound Units With No Keys
If you run a tow company or an impound yard, you end up holding vehicles nobody has a key for: units towed from a scene or left unclaimed. Roadrunner Lock and Key serves towing and impound companies, and we can quote a key or a lockout for a unit on your yard once we know the year, make and model. Have the paperwork that gives you authority over that vehicle in hand.
The rules on releasing, moving or disposing of a towed, impounded or repossessed vehicle are set by law, by your contracts and by whoever assigned the unit, and they are not ours to interpret. Follow your release paperwork. If the paperwork says the vehicle goes back to the owner as is, the owner may be the person who needs a key, not the yard.
For a unit that needs to move around the yard, ask whether a lockout (getting into the car) solves the problem or whether it truly needs a key that starts it. Those are different jobs at different prices, and saying which one you need on the call keeps the quote exact.

### Before you call about a tow or impound unit

- **The paperwork for that unit**: your tow or storage record and whatever release or assignment applies.
- **Year, make and model** and the key type, if you can tell.
- **Lockout or key.** Do you only need in, or does it need to start?
- **Where the unit is**, and who will meet us at the gate.

## What Proof of Ownership or Authority to Have Ready
Expect a legitimate locksmith to ask who owns the vehicle, or who has authority over it, before making a key. In New Mexico, the Motor Vehicle Division says the Certificate of Title serves as proof of ownership. For a business, that usually means the title or purchase paperwork in the business name, and for a tow or impound unit, your record and release paperwork for that vehicle.
This protects you as much as anyone. A key that can start a car on your lot is a key that can drive it off, and a locksmith who makes one without asking is one you do not want near your inventory. Ask on the call what will be needed for your vehicles, so the paperwork is ready when we arrive and the visit does not stall at the first car.
When the person standing at the car is a customer and not your business, the proof is theirs to show, not yours. The [lost car keys guide](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/lost-car-keys-heres-how-to-get-replacements/) lists the documents a driver usually needs, including registration and the VIN.

### Paperwork by type of business

- **Dealership or used car lot.** Title or purchase paperwork for the unit, plus the person at the lot who can sign off for the business.
- **Tow company or impound yard.** Your tow or storage record and the release or assignment for that vehicle.
- **Parking lot or garage.** Usually none from you. The car belongs to the customer, who shows their own ID and registration.

## A Customer Locked Their Keys in the Car on Your Lot: How to Refer Them
When a customer locks their keys in their car in your lot or garage, the simplest thing you can do is hand them a number you trust. Give them [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895). The driver tells Roadrunner Lock and Key the year, make and model and where the car is parked, gets the price and a real arrival time on the phone, and we deal with them directly.
Keep it easy for your staff. Put the number on a card at the booth or the office, and tell attendants not to try to open cars themselves with a slim jim or a coat hanger. Newer doors carry wiring and sometimes side airbags, and a damaged door turns into a conversation nobody on your staff wants to have.
If a child or a pet is locked inside, the customer calls 911 first, before anyone else. Our [car lockout page](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/car-lockout-albuquerque/) covers what the driver should do in that case and while they wait.

### What to tell the customer at the booth

- **Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895)** and ask for the price first.
- **Have the year, make and model** and the lot name or level ready.
- **Bring ID**, and say on the call if the registration is locked in the car.
- **Child or pet inside?** 911 first.

## Several Vehicles at Once: Quoting and Scheduling a Lot Visit
If more than one vehicle needs a key, put them all on one call. Roadrunner Lock and Key quotes each vehicle by year, make and model, so you see the price for every car before anyone drives out, and you can ask about handling them on the same visit. A short list with stock numbers and locations keeps the work moving from car to car.
Group the cars where you can. Units parked together in the back row are quicker to work through than units scattered across two lots. Have the cars unlocked if you can, the keys you do have pulled from the file and laid out with their stock tags, and one person on site who can answer questions and sign off.
Before the tech leaves, test every key on its car: lock, unlock, trunk and start. Do it for each vehicle, not just the first one, and put the new key straight back into the file with its stock number.

## How Quotes Work: Year, Make and Model for Every Vehicle
Roadrunner Lock and Key does not post fixed prices, because every job is quoted on the phone before dispatch, once we know the vehicle. For a business with several cars, that means one price per vehicle, set by its year, make and model, the key type and whether any working key is left. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with the list and the quotes come before anyone drives out.
What moves the price on a car key: the vehicle itself, since newer security systems take more equipment and more time; the type of key, since a plain metal key, a transponder key and a push-to-start smart key are different jobs; and whether a working key is left. Ask for the total for each vehicle, including the trip, and check that the price at the car matches the price on the phone.
If you want a feel for the numbers before you call, [how much it costs to replace a key fob](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/cost-to-replace-key-fob/) and our [Albuquerque locksmith cost guide](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-cost-albuquerque-nm/) explain the ranges. Your own quote comes from the phone call, not from a guide.

## Key Control on a Lot: Fewer Lost Keys, Fewer Keyless Cars
Some keyless cars on a lot came in with a key that went missing later. A simple key control routine makes that less likely: every key tagged with its stock number, a log of who took which key and when it came back, spares stored apart from the working keys, and the key room or cabinet locked. Roadrunner Lock and Key handles the locks on that door.
The door to the key room, the office or the key cabinet is a commercial lock job. If keys to that door have walked off with a former employee, a rekey makes the old keys useless without new hardware. If several people need different access, a master key system or a keypad lets you control who opens what. Our [commercial locksmith services](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/commercial-lockout-services/) page covers rekeys, master keys and access control.

### A key routine any lot can run

- **Tag every key** with the stock number, the day the car arrives.
- **Sign keys out and back in.** Name, time, and the car.
- **Keep spares separate** from the working keys, so one lost ring does not take both.
- **Lock the key room**, and rekey it when a key holder leaves.
- **Save [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895)** in the managers' phones as Roadrunner Lock and Key.

## Dealership and Tow Yard Service Across the Albuquerque Area
Roadrunner Lock and Key works from 3803 3rd St NW in Albuquerque and serves lots and yards across the city and in Rio Rancho, Corrales, Bernalillo, Placitas, Cedar Crest, Los Lunas, Belen and Santa Fe. We come to the vehicle, so a keyless unit we can do on site does not need a tow to get a key. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with your address for the price and a real arrival time.
Distance matters for scheduling. From our shop, a lot in Corrales is about 11 miles by road, Rio Rancho about 18, Los Lunas about 25, Belen about 38, and Santa Fe about 61, so plan Santa Fe work ahead. Local detail is on the town pages for [Albuquerque](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-albuquerque-nm/), [Rio Rancho](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-rio-rancho-nm/), [Bernalillo](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-bernalillo-nm/), [Los Lunas](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-los-lunas-nm/), [Belen](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-belen-nm/) and [Santa Fe](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/locksmith-santa-fe-nm/).

## How to Check a Locksmith Before You Let Them Work Your Lot
Before a locksmith makes keys for your inventory, check that you are dealing with a real local business. Roadrunner Lock and Key is owned by Genaro Vasquez, has a street address at 3803 3rd St NW, answers a 505 number, quotes the price before rolling, and drives a van marked with our name. You can check each of those yourself before the first car.
Run the same checks on anyone: a local 505 number, a street address you can find on Google Maps, the total price before they roll, and a marked vehicle when they pull onto the lot. Some listings that look local route calls to whoever is free, and a business that hands out keys to its cars has more to lose than most. You can find our address and reviews on our [Google Business Profile](https://www.google.com/maps?cid=11333808285460658512), and the [car lockout scams guide](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/car-lockout-albuquerque-scams/) lists the red flags.

Questions

## Asked and answered
The same answers you'd get on the phone.
[All our questions and answers](https://roadrunnerlockandkeynm.com/faqs/)

### Can you make a key for a car that came to our lot with no keys?
In many cases, yes. Roadrunner Lock and Key cuts and programs replacement keys at the vehicle, including transponder keys and push-to-start smart keys. Not every vehicle can be done on site; some newer luxury models need manufacturer-only tools. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with the year, make and model, and we tell you whether we can do that car and quote it before anyone drives out.

### Do you work with tow companies and impound yards?
Yes. Roadrunner Lock and Key serves towing and impound companies in the Albuquerque area, for units that need a lockout or a key. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with the year, make and model and say whether you only need in or need it to start. Have the paperwork that gives you authority over the vehicle ready, and follow your release paperwork on what happens to it.

### What paperwork should a dealership have ready for a key?
Expect any legitimate locksmith to ask who owns the vehicle. In New Mexico, the MVD says the Certificate of Title serves as proof of ownership, so the title or purchase paperwork in the business name is the usual starting point, along with someone at the lot who can sign off. Ask on the call what will be needed for your vehicles so the visit does not stall.

### Can you quote several cars on one call?
Yes. Give us a list with each vehicle's year, make and model, the key type and how many working keys you have. Roadrunner Lock and Key prices each vehicle on the phone before anyone drives out, and you can ask about handling them on one visit. Stock numbers and lot locations on the list keep the work moving from car to car.

### Can you make keys for every make and model?
No locksmith can honestly say yes to that. We cut and program keys for many vehicles at the car, but some newer luxury models need manufacturer-only programming tools that only the dealer has. That is why we ask for the year, make and model of each vehicle first. If one of yours needs the dealer, we tell you on the phone instead of driving out.

### Should we make a spare before we sell a car that came in with one key?
It is usually the easier moment. Some vehicles can only add a new key while a working key is present, and once that key is gone the job becomes an all-keys-lost job, which is more work. Roadrunner Lock and Key makes and programs spare keys and fobs at the vehicle. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with the year, make and model for the price.

### A customer locked their keys in their car in our parking lot. What should we tell them?
Give them [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895). The driver tells us the year, make and model and where the car is parked, gets the price and a real arrival time on the phone, and we deal with them directly, including checking that the car is theirs. If a child or a pet is inside, they call 911 first. Ask your attendants not to try opening the car themselves.

### Do you serve dealerships and tow yards outside Albuquerque?
Yes. Our shop is at 3803 3rd St NW in Albuquerque, and we also cover Rio Rancho, Corrales, Bernalillo, Placitas, Cedar Crest, Los Lunas, Belen and Santa Fe. Santa Fe is about 61 miles away by road, so plan that work ahead. Call [(505) 347-2895](tel:+15053472895) with your address for the price and a real arrival time for your location.
